WORKSHOP
My workshop will mainly be about storytelling through photography. A very important part of a photographer’s job is the research and analysis of his/her subject.
Before starting, photographers have to think about the message they want to transmit and how they have to photograph the subject in order to tell the full story. Every day we’ll have a look at the story of each student and see which pictures are still missing.
This will not only be a discussion about the substance but also about the different angles and compositions of photographs which could improve the final work. At the end of the workshop each student will hopefully have a final sequence of photographs with a clear message. I’ll also discuss with my students how in these difficult times, while the media are mainly focusing on lifestyle, it’s still possible to make a living with documentary photography.
BIO
I was born and raised in Burundi. At the age of 18 I left Africa to study photography in Belgium. After six years of work as a photographer for the Belgian newspaper ‘De Morgen’, I started working on personal projects. Most of my work takes me back to Africa. For my first project I focused on the African music scene.
This culminated in a traveling photo exhibition and the publication of the book 'Heart of Dance'. My latest project 'Troubled Waters' on global water issues resulted in a traveling exhibition, a book and an educational package for secondary schools. I’m a member of the photo agencies Panos Pictures, Grazia Neri, Cosmos and Hollandse Hoogte.
