Dieter Telemans - Troubled Waters

Over 1 billion people have no ready access to drinking water, the fundamental source of life. There is now a high probability that in the year 2020, when the world population reaches approximately 8 billion human beings, the number of people without ready access to drinking water will have risen to 3 billion. Global warming only risks aggravating this dramatic situation. Through photographs of the drought in the Horn of Africa, floods in Bangladesh, the Aral Sea disaster, gigantic wasteful water projects in Egypt and Turkey, sanitation issues in India and China and the hard life of water carriers in Mali, I want to inform people about this important and urgent issue. We can and must prevent the unacceptable from becoming possible. As Gandhi once said: “There is enough water for everybody’s need, but there is not enough water for everybody’s greed.”
